Astana seen from an airplane really highlights how remote the capital is, situated in the middle of a vast, empty steppe. Established as Kazakhstan's capital in 1998, the city is seeing a growing influx of Kazakhs from the south - the population has doubled in a decade - and massive development, dotting the skyline with futuristic Dubai-esque architecture.
